You need to take a tour. I took the Blackstone Glacier Cruise (winter boat tour) at the beginning of March. It was pricey but totally worth the money. We were lucky with the weather - it was a clear day and we were able to see both glaciers as well as otters, seals, a bald eagle and porpoises. Tons of wildlife to see, beautiful water, and very friendly and knowledgeable crew. The scenery is breathtaking and worth every penny.
The communication you get before you get there is thorough and direct, the tour departs from Whittier and you have to go through this really long tunnel so you need to give yourself enough time to get there, but don't worry - they tell you all about it in the instructions. I had a blast on the tour and if I'm ever in the area in the summer you bet your bottom dollar I'll be taking another tour with Lazy Otter again. -

In short, highly recommended.
We went on a trip with Captain Ben (and Chris a new employee of the company iirc) today. The weather wasn't ideal, but both staff tried their best to give us as a pleasant experience as possible. They were warm, knowledgeable, easy going. They looked closely for animals (and glacier calving) for us and helped us with tons of photos as well. We got to see bald eagles, otters, sea lions, mountain goats, and a bunch of birds. Oh, and they packed some delicious salmon spread and sandwiches (and other stuff) for us for lunch. Warm coffee on board too.
And of course, the glaciers are beautiful!
Update: a few hours after our trip, the business gave us some refund WITHOUT we asking for it, citing the shortened trip. I don't recall any terms in the confirmation email mentioning refund for a shortened trip, and even if there were, we didn't contact the business to request it anyway. This is incredible integrity, and I will definitely go with lazyotter again if I ever get the chance. You should too! -

Lazy Otter Cafe n Gifts is my go to place for fresh Americano and sweets to eat. Nice ladies, hot coffee, and a view of the harbor . I don't know about the charter but as a coffee shop they are great!

Blackstone Bay Tour - This was an amazing tour! Andrew was an amazing guide and very knowledgeable. We enjoyed a day of calving glaciers, smoked salmon on the beach and enjoying the amazing views. It is a little pricey but worth it!

Took my brother and his wife to see the glacier only to be told that it has receded so much that you have to take a boat ride or go kayaking to be able to see it. Hmm commercialization?
We found ourselves with nothing to do but check out these little shops lining the docks I have no recollection of since my last visit 15 years ago.
So on a cloudy and chilly Alaskan summer we got shakes, iced Americano, and blended mocha drinks from this cute little cafe that also offer boat rides, kayaking and such. The drinks were good and the view of the melting ice creating rivulets down the mountains was awesome.
Clean restroom and excellent service with the warm Alaskan hospitality rounds up this review to a solid 4 stars.
